The Balinese believe that human beings can help keep "high" ans "low" spirits in balance through making ritual offerings to both. For the balinese, the universe is dualistic in nature, a play of evershifting opposites. This opposition is symbolized by the black-and-white checked textile known as poleng, in which statues and other objects thought to be magically charged are often wrapped.
